-Beatles music in the Vault where we saw some Asian lady dancing by herself and having a great time.
-majority rules game

Getting lost in Barcelona is...
Fun!!

Hilarious when you discover you've been walking down the exact street you've been looking for all afternoon!!Barcelona
- arrived at 3 pm
- took airport shuttle to Place de Catalunya and walked to our hostel. Jenny and Lacey were going to meet us there.
- walked to Block of Discord which was only a block away from our hostel.
- walked down main boulevard to Place de Catalunya and stopped at the Information Center.
- started on our search for a souvenir shop I saw listed online on Carders Street.
- walked through Barrio Gothic and saw charming streets and cafes.
- finally found Carders even though we were already on the street. I really get confused when streets change names mid-street. Oops :)
- walked back to the Eixample district and ate at Que Que tapas bar listed by Rick Steves. I've discovered I do not like tapas.
- back at hotel to sleep. I was so happy that we made it all afternoon with not wanting to die of tiredness. Too bad we really weren't able to sleep because the streets were full of loud people ALL NIGHT LONG- it was a Saturday night and Barcelona football had a game (which we found out had won b/c of the people cheering in the streets at 2 AM). It did not get quiet until the sun rose.

We're on the news!!!
This is a snippet of a news story tonight on Fox 13 News. We participated in Making Strides for Breast Cancer at Liberty Park- a five mile walk to raise awareness and support. At the very end, a reporter asked to interview us so we were all nice and sweaty from speed walking but we were happy to answer her questions. She interviewed all of us (mom, Andrea, Lesley, and ended with me) and then her camera man followed us a little in the park. Lauren was still in her jammies that just happened to match our tee-shirts. I had to give a shout-out to Weight Watchers and Gina's Tuesday Turtles!!
So now I'm basically a legend "let's face it, it happened" and "I'm no longer carrying photo ID because people should know who I am" (Sue Sylvester)

Best "Saturday" Ever!!
So today was my day off this week; my "Saturday".
It was the best "Saturday" I've had in quite a long time!!!
It started out with a weigh-in at Weight Watchers (lost 4 lbs- thank
you stomach flu!!) then I washed my car. Lesley picked me up and we
met Haley and Aaron at the Aquarium. It is so fun to see Ronan and
Aaron play- it's like they're brothers!! They run and hug when they
see each other and then get super excited to see all the animals. I
don't know which was more entertaining, watching Aaron and RoRo or
seeing all the fish :)
Then I went with Haley to Rumrz (aka Eat a Burger) for lunch. It was
so nice to just sit and talk with her- it feels like forever since
I've done that with one of my sisters. She lent me a book about
positive management styles (which I read in an hour. I will review it
here in a later post).
Then I went to return something at Target and as I was browsing around
the clothes I ran into my best childhood friend Irene and her son
Luke!! We ended up going to dinner together and catching up. Irene is
one of those friends that you don't see very often but it seems like
no time has passed when you finally get to see eachother. The last
time I saw her, Luke was just a couple months old and now he is a
flirting toddler!! So Adorable :)
The night ended with the Netflix arrival of "Bride and Prejudice"-
totally awesome blend of Bollywood and Western movies. Loved it!! Plus
Sayid from Lost plays the Bingley character.
This was a day that I really needed and I am so grateful to Lesley and
Haley for letting me tag along on the playdate and to Irene for
following the promoting to go browse around Target while her husband
was in class this afternoon!!
I feel rejuvunated and will ready for work tomorrow and this busy
weekend at the gallery (General Conference/ Ladies Night).

OMGosh!! My Singles Ward is like a Jr. High Dance
You know how at a Jr. High Dance, the boys stand on one side of the gym and the girls on the other and they rarely meet in the middle?
Well imagine that scene.
Got it in your mind?
Good, now switch the location to an LDS Chapel and instead of sweaty prepubescent tweens, picture 25-35 year olds.
Instead of lining the walls, the sexes are separated by pews.
Yup, there you have my singles ward yesterday!! I was looking around and all the girls were sitting together on 1 pew and the boys (I could use the word “men” but that would be a gross misuse of the word) huddled together on another- rarely mixing it up between the 2.
It was the same in Sunday School. The teacher found it so ridiculous that she made everybody move so that it was boy-girl-boy-girl, and it took a lot of effort to get it that way! The boys were dragging their feet and not switching seats while the ladies were being compliant and getting up and making the boys move.
What is going on?!!
Do girls have koodies?!
Are they afraid if they even sit next to one of us, we are going to fall madly in love with them and stalk them like unto Fatal Attraction?!

Saturday Seething (part 5 of a 444 part series)
First off- BIG thank you(s) go out to Jenny and Haley for bringing me medicine when I was sick earlier this week. You SAVED me!!!! Thank you Jenny for bringing me a super bug killer pill that got me to stop throwing up- your kindness in offering it the minute you found out I was sick means so much to me.
Thank you Haley for bringing me blessed Zofran that took away the nausea, even super early in the morning with Aaron still in his jammies.
And a big Thank You to Lesley and my Mom for bringing me drinks, saltine crackers and making me cups of tea. I love you all!!!
So it is Saturday, and I am working (yet again). The word Saturday used to hold a happy meaning of relaxation and Eat-a-Burger lunches, but now it is just another word, much like unto Wednesday or Monday. It is not that I really mind working Saturdays, it’s just that everyone I know isn’t working and I imagine they are going to lunch or getting pedis, or shopping. Whenever I have days off, they usually are when everyone is working so I have no one to hang out with. I typically end up staying home all day on my days off and clean and/or play with Millie and Fiona. It’s funny b/c I don’t have TV or Internet access at my apartment (which made being sick SUPER boring!!)- so I don’t really know what I do all day. I guess Millie and Fi are excellent time wasters and zap it away- ha ha!!
Back to Saturday- I am working next Saturday as well for General Conference and then I won’t be working another Saturday until November!! That is partly due to the fact that I will be spending 2 Saturdays in
I know I complain a lot but I truly do love my job- I love talking with people interested in art. I love frame designing with clients. I love researching new art and finding out the latest releases from artist.
My job is pretty awesome and glamorous!

Trax
So this afternoon I find myself on public transportation on my way
downtown to take a look at an original Del Parson for a client who
lives out of state. Trax is actually quite enjoyable for a people
watcher but I feel I can't really people watch because i don't want
people to talk to me. I have forgotten why people usually have ear
buds in while on public transportation (like in the Tube)!! I do have
to admit I feel kind of metropolitan and a little grown up taking Trax
downtown. The only reason I'm taking Trax is because I don't know
where to park- ha ha. This way I can just jump off and back on once
I've seen the piece. It's a win-win :)
I should take Trax more- but then there are some weirdos but that
makes life interesting, right?

I've begun working out again (shocker) and I've been doing light
weight lifting and muscle toning instead of my go-to cardio on the
eliptucal. I have done so many squats and lunges in the last two days
that I can hardly sit down!!!

Saturday Seething (part 4 of a 444 part series)
1. The AC has been broken at the gallery (again) since Wednesday. It
has been hovering around 80 degrees so it's not that hot but just hot
enough to make you miserable and plus there is no air movement in this
corner of the building. Blah....
2. I know I scheduled myself for this but I'm really bummed to be
working ALL of Labor Day weekend even though I also worked ALL
Memorial Day weekend. And apparently there is a thing called holiday
pay but my company doesn't do that.
3. I no longer get paid overtime so the minute I hit 40 hours I'm
closing the gallery which mean I get to close at 6 pm today!! It's
okay because I'm pretty sure DB is closing early tonight too.
4. I sold my first original painting and yet I feel like I did
something wrong; I guess I thought I'd feel differently about my first
original sale. I love the artist and working with her and the client
has been wonderful and actually quite fun. I thought I'd want to do a
happy dance and make a Leatherby's run after the deal was made but I
simply took a deep breath and got back to work. I guess I'm just
maturing into a more pratical lady.
So now my dear friends, go have a fantastic Labor Day weekend for all
of us left laboring in our offices/jobs!!

Planning a Trip
So Jenny, Lacey, Lesley and I are going on a
To be totally honest, I am quite overwhelmed by how much I want to do in each city and how much can I actually accomplish in a few hours. The activity I love most is simply walking around with my camera and soaking in the culture and sights of a city. Most of my Italian art background is in architecture so that approach really appeals to me. Plus, I have never been on a cruise before so I am not sure what to expect.
We arrive in
So we board on Sunday and then whole first day is at sea.
We get to
The next day is
1. St. Peter’s Square/Basilica (except it is closed Wednesday mornings for private audiences with the Pope so it will have to be an afternoon activity).
2. The Pantheon
3. Trevi Fountain/Spanish Steps
and I’ll add a 4. The Borghese Gallery (to see Bernini sculpture!!)*
Sure I’d love to see the Forum, the Coliseum, etc but I really love Baroque Rome more than Ancient Rome (except the Pantheon- it is my top favorite ancient roman site). Sure I’d love to go to the
The next day is
My top attractions in
- Ghiberti’s Gates of Paradise (and all the other doors on the Baptistery of course!!) well basically everything included at the Duomo.
- The Uffizi*
- The Academia to see Michelangelo’s David (the real one, not the replica they have on the street).*
- Ponte Vecchio
After our two insane days in
Now we could be more active and take the train to either Nice or
Our last port is
Like I said earlier- I would be happy to walk around and enjoy the cities and embrace the beautiful chaos that is southern

That 4:30 Feeling
I don't drink energy drinks but I LOVE the 5 Hour Energy commercials
with "that 2:30 feeling"- that is SO me most days at the gallery. Its
not that I fall asleep it is more like I cannot focus. Every day
around 4 pm I need something to pick me up. I used to have a secret
stash of Starbursts that I'd dip into for my 4 o'clock pick me up but
I had to get rid of that habit with my weight problem. Then I switched
to clementine oranges in the Spring but I think I must have OD'ed on
them. I used to take a quick walk in the parking lot but it got too
hot- I would get back to my desk and have sweat running down my face,
which is not a good thing in my profession. My trick as of late has
been a cold water refill in my water bottle but that isn't doing it
today. I'd love a slurpee or a crisp apple, or sour watermelons...ummm
sour watermelon!!!
Do any of you get "that" feeling during your day? What do you do to
combat the "2:30 feeling"? Any tips or suggestions would be greatly
welcome :)

Ideallic
from Memorial Day to July 21st. It's awesome!! Today was Ashley's 6th
birthday and she had a princess tea party at La Caille. Isn't the
setting just perfect for a castle?! I feel like I'm standing in front
if a painted backdrop but this is how it truly looks (iPhone cameras
don't lie- they aren't good enough for that! LOL).
It was hot but it was wonderful and totally Ashley.
Evan's 5th birthday was yesterday and he a totally Evan part over the
weekend with a bounce house, waterslide/kiddie pool, and BBQ. He got
guns and transformers from his friends and family- it was strange to
have a Thomas the Tank Engine free birthday for him but he's all Star
Wars and stuff now.
The next birthday is Valie's who is having a rock star party- I can't
wait to see what Vickie comes up with! (as a random side note, it took
me 3 times to type Vickie's name right. It kept coming out as Bickie!!
That's what Aaron calls Bickie- dang I did it again!!)

After the events of this past week, I have realized how precious this life is. Life is too short to be miserable and “men are that they might have joy”- it is not worth wasting the time to be negative and whine. We need to choose to be happy and choose to do things that make us happy. I work ALL the time and for what? So I can have big numbers on a pay check? I need to spend more time with my family, I need to make time for friends, I need to have some fun. With that in mind, Lesley, Jenny, Lacey, and I are going on a Mediterranean cruise in October. I have worked so hard this past year and it is time for a vacation so we are going all out on a wonderful experience. I get to go to

Will You Accept This Rose? Thoughts on The Bachelorette 2010
I think Ali has the best group of guys this show as ever had!! They have traveled to Europe (they keep saying “around the world” but really it was just
I think Ali has been an alright Bachelorette, but Jillian and Trista are still my favorites. Ali giggles when she is nervous and so she giggles after almost every sentence. Plus her hair looks messy all the time which is not a good combo with her long extensions and her clothes aren’t always that flattering (what was that poncho/sweatshirt she wore in
I heart Chris!! He always has the best comments in his interviews. He is sweet, handsome and genuine. He is the best bachelor on this show since Ryan Sutter. The comments on Chris Harrison’s blog repeatedly say that Chris is “too real for reality TV” which I can see. But isn’t that honesty and “realness” the whole reason why we started watching reality TV in the first place? I loved watching his hometown date with Ali (why can’t that be Alli- ie ME! LOL). They got to walk along the beach and play with his dog then hang out at his house. I thought they were so sweet sitting on the porch and did a little role play about how married life would be. A: “How was your day, dear?” C: “Well the boss yelled at me again. I need a beer.” A: “Oh well I have one in my purse.” Then when he started talking about his mom and how they had pictures of her all over the house- it was really sweet. It was nice to see them keep her memory alive. Having lost a parent, I don’t know what is worse, having constant reminders that they are gone or just moving on in life trying hard not to even think about it. We don’t have pictures of my dad around, they are all hidden up in Cameron’s room. I thought I would cry watching them talk about his mother but I didn’t- I just kept thinking “I have a message I would like to share with you about the Plan of Salvation and Eternal Families”!!
Back to Chris and Ali’s relationship- earlier on in the season, Ali kept thinking about him as a friend but then things changed in
Now to Roberto- I finally see it! The blogs have been saying how “hot” he is and I just couldn’t see past his unibrow which made him always look like he was scowling. But seeing him in
In conclusion- I am on Team Chris if you couldn’t tell.
Even though 90% of the couples on this show don’t last, people still love it. I think we watch it because we love falling in love. We get emotionally invested in these people and their relationship. We want them to succeed and be happy. We read all about their break-ups because we care and we feel like we were a part of the relationship.

Saturday Seething (part 3 of a 444 part series)
I'm not seething today- I am grateful today but I like alliterations :)
I am so grateful for my Savior and for my eternal family. I have
witnessed the power of prayer and the miracle of fasting.
Without going into too much detail, my bff Kendra had a blood clot in
her brain and was in an induced coma for 2 days. She is now awake and
is able to talk and move all her limbs!!! She is still in the ICU but
she's alive.
Today is her 26th birthday- HAPPY BIRTHDAY K!!!!!! I think the nurses
in the ICU are getting her a cake :)
I wish SO much that I could be there with her but I'm working. I am so
grateful I was able to go yesterday and visit her.
Thank you everyone for your prayers, love, and keeping her in your
thoughts. I know without a doubt it was love and prayers that saved her.

This is such a great movie and you all should watch it if you ever get

it!!

Saturday Seething (part 2 of a 444 part series)
I am working today but I just had 2 glorious days off this past
Thursday and Friday!!! Plus I have this Monday off as well- things are
looking up and I finally feel like I have a life again.
So my two days off started with a lovely collagen facial at Cameo
College of Beauty- it was 1 hour and 45 minutes of HEAVEN!!! Then I
went to Andrea's to help decorate for Lauren's first birthday and I
ended up taking Evan and Jack swiming at my complex. They were the
most perfect little boys ever!! They listened and never ran away from
me and stayed right with me in the pool. I was a little nervous to
take them swiming by myself but they were little angels for their
Auntie Alli. Then Lesley came down and say by the pool for a bit. She
took E to the potty when he needed to go (I was impressed he didn't
pee in the pool and actually told us when he needed to go). The we had
a fun party for Lauren at the Powell's. Yummy food and L couldn't have
been more adorable!!
My second day off started with a drive down to PG to pick up Kendra-
we went to the Utah Arts Festival down at Library Square in SLC. The
Greek food I got for lunch was pretty good. The art was okay- some
blew me away like the watercolors on silk, the embroidery paintings,
and the glazed/blowtorched canvases. Then we took K home and watched
some TV with her. It was such a fun time and I had not seen Kendra in
over a month!!
Since this is suppossed to be my weekly rant- I better get to the
point of this 444 part series: public nose blowing MUST GO!!!!!
There are special desingated places for "private business" so why do
it at the dinner table in a restaurant? Or during a business meeting?
Or at the movie theater? A simple wipe, I understand, but a full on
blow and a nose pick is NOT OK!!! Especially when they then examine
it... Sorry, I just threw-up in my mouth a little.
Get up from the table, excuse yourself from the meeting or breathe
through your mouth until the movie is over- do whatever you have to do
to NOT blow your nose in public.
Let it be written- Let it be done!!!

My New Favorite Site
Go to www.shabbyapple.com
It is wonderful!!! I am sitting here at my desk just drooling over
these dresses and day dreaming about how great they'd look on me here
in the gallery :)
Check out the "flirty" dress section on the left side bar- it's so
fun!! As a bonus, all the dresses (well the ones I've seen) are under
$100.
My favorites are : Champs Elysee, Fifth Ave, Ingird, and Nine to Five
in apple green.
Check them out :)

Saturday Seething (part 1 of a 444 part series)
I really want a Saturday off of work. An entire Saturday away from work so I can get errands run, clean my house, spend time with my family, and have some fun (maybe even go on a date).
I have only had 3 whole Saturdays off of work this year. The first was when I was in
I will have Saturday July 3rd off and Saturday July 24th off (YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!) so I need to make sure I have something really fun planned those weekends. I am thinking Cabin and going to Rockport or going up the canyon to Ledgmere and have a bonfire and roast marshmallows. I also think it would be fun to go camping at
Well tonight I am going to a Luau Pool Party with Jenny’s ward and I am really looking forward to having some fun, or at least swimming in my Aunt’s pool- it’s the best pool :)
Happy Saturday to you all and I hope you make them fun!!

I need to soften my heart...
Because I think Relief Society is full of crap. I really hate that I think that but I do.
I get to teach Relief Society this week at it’s the Teachings for Our Times lesson. The selected Conference talk is Sister Beck’s “And Upon the Handmaids in Those Days Will I Pour Out My Spirit”
After reading it- all I can think is how full of crap it is. She starts out talking about how women in the Church, all over the world, are struggling and facing difficult times and hard challenges. Her answer to help: 1. Personal Revelation 2. Attending Relief Society and 3. Learn the proper way to measure success. She says, “I have felt that there has never been a greater need for increased faith and personal righteousness.” Ya right, because the reason we are all struggling is because we lack faith and aren’t righteous enough- Thanks Sister Beck, that is way comforting.
Granted, I think her section on personal revelation is wonderful and insightful and something we all can apply to our lives with more zeal. I have been trying to follow the promptings of the Spirit more regularly. How am I to know if the revelation is from God and not just my own thoughts if I never act upon them? So I now try to act on almost all the promptings I get- like where I should go for lunch or whom to Facebook a little message to that day. I was really inspired by Sister Bonnie Parkin when she came to talk to our stake. She said, “Never suppress a generous thought” and I have taken that heart. Even if I feel foolish, I have tried applying my thoughts into action. Like what President Bednar (Elder Bednar now) used to say at BYU-Idaho, you must act or be acted upon. I choose to act upon my promptings and not have my thoughts act upon me. Back to personal revelation, a good way to continue to receive it and obtain solutions to increasingly difficult problems is to act upon it, even the little seemingly insignificant ones. Sister Beck says, “having the Spirit of revelation makes it possible to prevail over opposition and persist in faith through difficult days and essential routine tasks.” Okay, so I am with you there Sister Beck, but as you move on to your next point, I kind of want to punch you in the face.
Let my preface this paragraph by letting you know that my all time favorite Church callings have been the one I have now, being a Relief Society Teacher, and being on Enrichment when I was a sophomore at BYU-Idaho. The older I get, the more I think Relief Society to moving away from the younger sisters/ the more I realize RS is for the “old people”. I have been blessed to attend wards all over the world and the same set up exists- the young sisters in the ward are called to be in the Primary or Young Womens… they do not attend Relief Society. And now the RS has basically eliminated all social aspects of its organization essentially leaving the young sisters isolated. I remember my mom going to Home Making and then to Enrichment- now they have “break out groups”- which sounds way fun (NOT!!!!!). I guess I should be grateful that I get to attend RS in my singles ward b/c once I get married or attend a family ward, I’ll mostly likely be put in Primary or Young Womens and will not return to RS until I am middle aged. So getting to what Sister Beck says- “When Relief Society functions in an inspired way, it lifts women up and out of a troubled world and into a way of living that prepares them for the blessings of eternal life.” She continues on saying RS helps sisters increase in personal righteousness and strengthen home and families. How can it help strengthen home and families when the sisters that have the young families cannot attend RS and they no longer have the social activities outside the 3 hour Sunday block? How can they be taught and inspired themselves when they are teaching Primary? Lets be honest, I really only attend Church to take the Sacrament and I attend my other 2 meetings only because I am obedient.
And don’t even get me started on the “Charity” aspect of RS- actions speak much louder than words and from what I have observed just recently with my mother, I laugh with anger at her RS. My mother broke her RIGHT arm back in February- she actually told her VT (which I was shocked that she actually let her VT know) and her VT send a card. That’s it- no offer to bring her dinner or if she needed errands run or need a ride any where since she broke her RIGHT arm and she is right handed- plus she was on heavy narcotic pain meds so really shouldn’t have been driving. Then my mother’s arm did not heal properly and she had massive corrective surgery and I happened to run into 2 members of her RS and asked them if they could get some meals into my parents… nothing. My mother ended up being the hospital for 2 nights for her outpatient surgery and nothing from her RS. Isn’t this the kind of situation where it is easy to get the RS involved and they would all be jumping to help? Granted, my parents are on a full-time mission but she is still a member of their Relief Society and my mother is a difficult person who has a hard time accepting help BUT they should have tried harder and insisted on bringing at least one meal- my poor father is so helpless it is amazing he didn’t starve to death- oh that’s right, my mother made him dinner. With one hand. While high on OXY!
I think maybe RS needs to change its name to “Teaching, Inspiring and Strengthening hour of Church” because that is its focus. It is no longer a society and it doesn’t really provide relief. It used to, but no so much any more.
Now I do believe there are some amazing RS out there that do care about its sisters and provides compassionate service- I know this because my BFF Kendra is the compassionate service leader in her RS- she works on her calling constantly and helps get meals to new mothers, takes sick sisters to the doctor, and even had a schedule set up for companion/visitors for a sister who was going through Chemo so she wouldn’t be alone. I am so tempted to go join Kendra’s ward- I bet that level of service and compassion in her ward has brought the sisters closer together and truly lifts them “into a way of living that prepares them for the blessings of eternal life.” Maybe it’s just the wards in
So this post has been filled with bitterness and a whole lot of anger but I am thinking more and more of the work Kendra does and it is making me feel a bit more optimistic.
I love serving in the Relief Society- well come to think of it, all but one of my callings in my adult life have been in the RS. I am all about women and the power we posses. We have special gifts of the spirit and I totally see Sister Beck’s point when she references President Kimball: “Thus it will be that female exemplars of the Church will be a significant force in both the numerical and spiritual growth of the Church in the last days.”- Ensign, Nov. 1979.
The Sisters Rock and basically we will be the ones to build up the
I guess my anger stems from my disappointment in what I thought RS would be when I grew up. I was looking forward to Home Making night and making cute things to help make my house a home. I would hear my mom get nostalgic for the days when RS had a weekday lunch and the sisters would be able to socialize and get a yummy recipe to make for their families. I was looking forward to the friendships I would make and things I would learn to help me be a better mom. Then I got to RS in college and I loved Enrichment!! It was a mix of spiritual lessons with lots of socializing. It is hard to get to know people at Church and Enrichment helped us bond so we could then have friends to sit with and the little conversations between lessons could be more meaningful. Then they made Enrichment quarterly (once every four months) which made it 1 time during a semester- LAME. Now in my singles ward, we don’t even have it! What is there left to make RS any different than Sunday School other than its only women? We did have a RS temple night back in April which I loved- but even then it’s not like a social activity.
I think a big thing that all women struggle with is loneliness. As a single girl- I don’t have co-workers and I don’t have a ton of friends so most days, my social interaction is limited to my clients and family (and my cute kitties but they don’t really talk back!). I am so lonely and I have a hard time making friends (I’ve been this way my entire life). RS should offer a built-in friendship but it doesn’t. I am the teacher and still most of the girls don’t know me in my RS.
I see my sisters with young kids- they don’t get to talk to adults except their husbands and the most conversation they get is between Max and Ruby or Thomas and Friends.
I see my grandmother who sits most evenings with my grandpa in their comfy rocking chairs- luckily they winter in Yuma and have the most amazing set of friends (I am so going to visit again this year and hang out with their hilarious group of friends and go to the swap meet and get shrimp tacos in Mexico and gamble at the Q casino!!). Okay- so my grandma probably isn’t the best example because her life is pretty awesome as is :)
I see my mom who hasn’t been to RS in her own language is about 8 years. She has no friends (sorry Mom but its true) and she still talks about her
Concluding this long and most likely blasphemous rant- I really love being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I know that we have a Heavenly Father who loves us. I know that Jesus Christ is our Savior and that Joseph Smith restored the Gospel and Priesthood to the Earth. I know that we have a prophet to lead and guide us. I know that Relief Society is a divinely instituted organization and that it has the power to change the world.
I also know that my heart can and will be softened so that I can teach this lesson with the Spirit to fulfill the purpose of Relief Society as outlined by Sister Beck- Teach, Inspire, and Strengthen.
*The Image I chose to include is “For Such a Time as This” by Elspeth Young. It is her depiction of Queen Esther. I love it and it is making me feel better- I think the women of the scriptures would be an awesome RS lesson

Luke 22:43
“And there appeared an angel unto Him from Heaven, strengthening Him.”
This passage of scripture has been on my mind lately. My recent scripture study has me focused on the Atonement and Gethsemane which normally I glance over b/c it makes me too sad and used to give me nightmares as a kid (that is why I only saw “The Testament” once when it was at the Legacy Theater at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building). I prefer to focus on the resurrection and the wonderful things that happened after our Savior’s suffering but for some reason, I am becoming more and more fascinated by what took place in
This scripture has been illustrated by several artists throughout history but I have only chosen a few to illustrate my idea. The first image is by Carl Bloch, a 19th century Danish painter, the second is by Liz Lemon Swindle, a contemporary LDS artist, the third is by James Christensen, a contemporary LDS artist, and lastly we have “The Holy Trinity” by Masaccio, an Early Italian Renaissance painter.
In the Bloch and Swindle, you see the angel cradling the Savior and holding Him up. While these images are beautiful, almost tragically beautiful, I do not think they really fully illustrate Luke 22:43. The Bible used the word “strengthening” not “comforting” so with that word choice in mind, I think James Christensen’s “
Putting it in a more spiritual LDS context, I find this piece emotionally moving when you think of the Priesthood. I think the angel was sent to strengthen the Savior by the power of the Holy Priesthood, which is the same power that created all things. When you think of how awful His suffering must have been and how difficult it was for Him to be away from His Father’s spirit, He needed the strength and encouragement of a Priesthood holder. I love how the angel stands behind Him, his head bowed with arms out-stretched to balance and support the suffering Savior.
As I was thinking about the significance of Christensen’s composition, I was hit by its similarity to Masaccio’s composition of “The Holy Trinity” but instead of Gethsemane, the scene is Golgotha (well, set inside an Early Renaissance church) and instead of an angel, it is God the Father who has his arms out-stretched behind the cross.
I love the idea of our Heavenly Father as a Priesthood holder looking over all of His children with out-stretched arms to support and strengthen us- even if we can’t see Him. He stands behind us, sending angels, messengers, visiting teachers, neighbors, friends, and sweet tender mercies exactly when we need them. Our Father in Heaven and His Son, Jesus Christ are actively engaged with what is going on in this world and in our lives- they love us and want us to return to be with them for eternity.
I also like to think my own father is watching over me as my priesthood leader and sending me strength and blessings when I need them in my day-to-day life.
Isn’t the Gospel of Jesus Christ so awesome?!!! I cannot imagine the hopelessness others must feel without the knowledge of the infinite atonement of Jesus Christ, eternal families, and the blessings of temple covenants.
So the next time I am going through a difficult trail- I am going to remember the Lord is ever present and the way I am feeling nothing in comparison to how our Savior felt in Gethsemane. With the knowledge of the Gospel, there is only room for joy!!
