Weddings and Funerals

Weddings and funerals are one in the same in the life of a single girl.

Don’t get me wrong- I ADORE weddings and am truly HAPPY for my friends- it is simply that weddings usually herald in the inevitable death of our friendship.*

It is totally understandable since we no longer are in the same stage of life- they have husbands that they need to take care of and we can no longer sit at the back of our singles ward activities (or the TA office) and laugh at the prissy girls and the guys that try too hard.

It is not that we mean to “break-up” neither do we have ill feelings towards each other, we just fizzle out.  Enduring friendships take a ton of work and when you don’t see or talk to each other all the time, you fizzle out.

That is why I love Facebook- We single girls can keep in touch with our married friends without having to make an awkward effort to have a relationship :)

I get to see pictures of their babies and tell them “congrats” on big news and they can see pictures from my travels and my totally awesome single life- It’s perfect!

To All My Friends (married and/or single): *imagine me singing:*  “Facebook, Facebook will keep us together!”

*The only exception to this is my BFF Kendra where we actually became better friends after she got married- it really helps that her husband is awesome and lets me steal her away constantly!!

BTW: K- We are having a Red Mango run the next time I have a meeting in AF. Okay? Good! Love, A

Just trying to see if I can send video to my blog via my iPhone

Valie is singing Happy Birthday to Auntie Lesley:)

Moab 2010

Delicate Arch!!
I loved Arches National Park and totally want to go back some day. We
also went river rafting on the Green River and ate at the Moab Diner.
Our campground was delightful with lots of trees and comfy grass. It
was SO windy so we didn't get much sleep in out tent but now I think I
like camping (LASIK has changed my life in yet another way!! LOL).
It was a great way to celebrate turning 26!! Thanks Jenny for coming-
you made it more fun!!!

Vacation is Approaching!!!

At 4 PM May 20, 2010 my vacation starts!! Lesley, Jenny, and I are
going to Moab for the weekend with my singles ward. We'll get there
Friday around noon and go for a hike (destination undecided but i'm
leaning toward Delicate Arch) then have a group activity that night.
Saturday is a river raft trip, aka massive water fight. I'm so excited
to go camping and not have to worry about my contacts :)

Thinking about Pino

Here are some more images of Pino’s work.

A lot of his work surrounds boudoir scenes with sensuous women but there are also some tender moments between women and children as illustrated in my previous post.

His standing, single figures are powerful and ennobling. His soft brushstrokes infer a reverence for the subject and yet the faces lack emotion.

I find his work interesting as he keeps the full figure and doesn’t seem to be fetishizing the female body by segmentation, and yet there isn’t really a strong personality to the women.  He treats their figures with respect but then doesn’t provide them with a soul.  Is he just painting beautiful objects or are these real women and he is missing the point of portraits?

The first image “Angel from Above” probably has the most personality with a simple smile and the child in her arms. I think this might be my favorite so far.  Instead of having down-cast eyes like some of Pino’s women, she looks strait out at the viewer with the child in her arms, challenging our gaze.

I keep going back and forth thinking Pino’s work is heavily theoretical or simply pretty pictures. In our Post-Structuralist society, could it be both?

I’ve been having lots of fun thinking about art J

Pino

So I was doing research on Pino, an Italian Artist now living in New York that we will soon be the dealer for here in Utah. I ran across the first image, “A Soft Place in my Heart” from 2010 and instantly loved it.  I think it has a contemporary approach to a nostalgic subject. When I continued to delve deeper into his body of work I found “A Time to Remember” from 2005.  Do you notice anything? THEY ARE EXACTLY THE SAME PIECE!!! Just with different coloring.  The 2005 version is much darker and has a lot of dimension where as the 2010 version has a solid grey backdrop that keeps the eye flat.

I am somewhat astounded that he has both of these pieces in reproduction and they were created only 5 years a part.  I in my experience, I have never seen an artist literally and blatantly repeat a painting.  Repeating compositions is common but the artists usually change the costume, color and texture of fabric, or hair color of the model.

So what do you think? Which version do you prefer?

Russian Realism

This just arrived today- I am so excited to finally have it ready for
display in the gallery!! It is Podlyaski's "Yellow Socks" from the
Springville Museum of Art. Well Yellow Socks is a shortened title
because the full title wouldn't fit on my labels.
I'm excited to bring something different to the gallery. I think it
fits well with our religious sensibilities and our secular side as
well. It is sweet and charming. I love that the scale is on her level,
keeping the scene a bit more intimate, almost sacred. It reminds me of
Mary Cassat's "Little Girl in a Blue Armchair" except Podlyaski's
little girl is more proper and reserved that Cassat's who sits
slouched with her skirt around her waist. I love the sketchy yet
distinct details in the wall paper and the patterns on her clothes. I
love the color choice of acidic yellow for her socks and the way it
gives the girl a realistic story- who doesn't know a girl with a
favorite something or other that she wears with everything no matter
what? Heck I still do with my shoes (which are yellow...
Coincedence?!! Maybe).
I have other Russian Realism works coming to join this precious girl
and hopefully this can be a continuous trend in helping people
purchase at art that isn't only religious- not that's bad don't get me
wrong- but since I'm in a Deseret Book, most of my display is
religious in nature. Hopefully I can help broden minds of the average
DB customer and help them see new possibilites.
What do you think of this piece? Isn't the frame lovely?! It's a
brushed gold so it looks like silver and gold- it's one of my
favorites plus it's super afforable. The entire piece, art and frame
is $190!! I kind of want to order one for myself :)

Dreaming

Have you watched this week’s Modern Family yet? I have been day dreaming about vacations a lot lately so now I SO want to go to Hawaii and stay at the Four Seasons!!! I found it very interesting that they were by the pool almost in every shot and never at the beach, did any one else notice that?

Well I think that situation would be perfect for my family.  Lesley HATES natural bodies of water (irrational but I completely understand it) so the pool situation would work for her.  My mother could go to the lavender farm and take my dad along to give him something to do.  We could go to the beach with the nieces and nephews and let them play in the sand and then we would get all together at night for dinner.

It really is ideal- now I just have to talk my parents into a family vacation.  We’ve done Vegas as a family but it has kind of lost its excitement.  I remember doing some family vacations when we were younger, like our stay at the Phoenician in Phoenix or our trips to Disney World where Dad had business conferences.

What would be really fun is a CRUISE!! That would be the perfect family vacation with so much to do and see to please everyone.  If you want to sit by the pool and be warmed by the sun, you can do that! If you want to shop or see the locals, you can do that!! It seems like a win-win situation :)

In conclusion, I just really want to go somewhere fun and relaxing. Sadly, I am too poor to actually go on vacation and I’m a workaholic so even if I did get a vacation, I’d be too worried about work the whole time. I guess my overnight trip to Moab with my singles ward next weekend will have to suffice for this summer. I’m supposed to be having more fun in 2010 but I’m not.  I don’t know how to have fun.

Country School House, 1879

Now this type of art isn’t always my favorite but I am loving this new piece by Morgan Weistling.*

It reminds me of Anne of Green Gables with the one room country school I think it is great how Weistling has given each child a personality and a story. Some are listening to the young, beautiful teacher, others are whispering to each other; girls are starring at boys and some of those boys are starring at other girls.  I just laugh and think of my education experience!! I also love the old images of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln on the wall.
