So I was doing research on Pino, an Italian Artist now living in New York that we will soon be the dealer for here in Utah. I ran across the first image, “A Soft Place in my Heart” from 2010 and instantly loved it. I think it has a contemporary approach to a nostalgic subject. When I continued to delve deeper into his body of work I found “A Time to Remember” from 2005. Do you notice anything? THEY ARE EXACTLY THE SAME PIECE!!! Just with different coloring. The 2005 version is much darker and has a lot of dimension where as the 2010 version has a solid grey backdrop that keeps the eye flat.
I am somewhat astounded that he has both of these pieces in reproduction and they were created only 5 years a part. I in my experience, I have never seen an artist literally and blatantly repeat a painting. Repeating compositions is common but the artists usually change the costume, color and texture of fabric, or hair color of the model.
So what do you think? Which version do you prefer?
