Day 1

Today is the first day of toilet training Millie and Fiona. Roll your eyes if you must but Les and I have done a lot of serious research and reading (we actually checked out books from the library) and we believe it is possible. Plus M&F are perfect candidates- they are comfortable in our bathrooms jumping on and off the toilet, have never had accidents, and they are smart problem solvers. For example, they don't like closed doors so they learned how to open all the doors in our apartment except 2 (Lesley's bedroom and our coat closet).

Step 1: place a small box with just enough litter next to the toilet.

Our best resource has been "How to Toilet-Train Your Cat: 21 Days to a Litter-Free Home" by Paul Kunkel. It seems every article we read followed basically this method but the techniques and mechanics vary by cat. The timing of the method is also based on the cat's comfort level so if the cat does well with each step then you can speed up the process or if the cat struggles with a step you stay on that step until they are comfortable again. The trick is to make little adjustments every step to create a chaining motion in changing their behavior.

I'm so glad you're posting on this process. I have been fascinated by it ever since you told me about it. Good luck M & F!
